چکیده

4-mercaptobenzonitrile (MBN) in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au and Ag electrodes was studied by surface enhanced infrared absorption and Raman spectroscopy, to correlate the nitrile stretching frequency with the local electric field exploiting the vibrational Stark effect (VSE). Using MBN SAMs in different metal/SAM interfaces, we sorted out the main factors controlling the nitrile stretching frequency, which comprise, in addition to external electric fields, the metal-MBN bond, the surface potential, and hydrogen bond interactions. On the basis of the linear relationships between the nitrile stretching and the electrode potential, an electrostatic description of the interfacial potential distribution is presented that allows for determining the electric field strengths on the SAM surface, as well as the effective potential of zero-charge of the SAM-coated metal. Comparing this latter quantity with calculated values derived from literature data, we note a very good agreement for Au/MBN but distinct deviations for Ag/MBN which may reflect either the approximations and simplifications of the model or the uncertainty in reported structural parameters for Ag/MBN. The present electrostatic model consistently explains OPEN ACCESS Int. J. Mol. Sci. 2012, 13 7467 the electric field strengths for MBN SAMs on Ag and Au as well as for thiophenol and mercaptohexanoic acid SAMs with MBN incorporated as a VSE reporter.

Vibrational Stark effects calibrate the sensitivity of vibrational probes for electric fields in proteins.

Infrared spectroscopy is widely used to probe local environments and dynamics in proteins. The introduction of a unique vibration at a specific site of a protein or more complex assembly offers many advantages over observing the spectra of an unmodified protein. We have previously shown that infrared frequency shifts in proteins can arise from differences in the local electric field at the prob...

Vibrational Stark Spectroscopy in Proteins: A Probe and Calibration for Electrostatic Fields

We report the first measurement of the vibrational Stark effect in a protein, providing quantitative information on the sensitivity of a vibrational transition to an applied electric field. This can be used to interpret changes in the vibrational frequency that are often observed when amino acids are changed or when a protein undergoes a structural change in terms of the change in the internal ...

Vibrational Stark Spectroscopy of NO Bound to Heme: Effects of Protein Electrostatic Fields on the NO Stretch Frequency

The vibrational Stark effect measures the effect of an external electric field on the vibrational (IR) spectrum of a molecule. This technique gives quantitative information on the sensitivity of a vibrational peak position to an electric field. This calibration can be used to evaluate shifts in the vibrational frequency caused by changes in the local electric field in the organized electrostati...

CO on Pt(335): Electric field screening on a stepped surface

We compare CO’s response to electric fields at edge and terrace sites on the stepped Pt~335! surface. The comparison is made at zero frequency and at the frequency of the C–O stretch vibration. Atop-bonded CO is observed with reflection–absorption ir spectroscopy ~RAIRS!, electroreflectance vibrational spectroscopy ~EVS!, and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy ~HREELS!. Coadsorbe...
